Alcohol Maths

Last day we looked briefly at calculating alcohol units. There is lots of good stuff on the web about alcohol abuse, drink driving etc. The NHS website is excellent.
In the next lesson we continue on the theme of alcohol before we move onto 'Wages and Tax'.
I have a favour to ask - could you add a comment please. I want to know two things.
1. Did you know how to calculate units of alcohol before the lesson?
2. Do you think is was a useful topic to study?
You can answer anonymously or use you first name. DO NOT use your full name.

The Unit Specification and ASPs

The Unit Specification gives detail of what you will study and how you will be assessed. It can be bit complicated to understand. Depending on you level you will be assessed at either SCQF Level 4 (F3GF 10) or Level 5 (F3GF 11)

Briefly there are 2 sections
Using Number - percentages, income tax, timesheets, formula, etc. There is also a setion on reading scales.
Using Graphical Information - one question on reading a graph, another on drawing a graph.

The Unit Specifications and Assessment Support Packs can be found on the SQA website. The link goes directly to the Core Skills Numeracy section so you wont have to struggle with the SQA website. YEH!

Why Numeracy?

When do those working in Health and Social Care use Numeracy?

Numbers are part of their work and are also needed for every day life.
The numeracy you will do can be divided into 3 sections
  1. Number skills for everyday life e.g. timetables, money, foreign currency etc.
  2. Number skills for work e.g. reading rosters, calculating drug dosages, filling in time-sheets, working out travel claims, calculating parking costs, dealing with clients budgeting etc.
  3. Reading reports which include statistics and graphs and being able to write or contribute to reports.

In both Health Care and Social Care there is no way to predict what financial questions you might be asked. You cannot be expected to answer them but websites such as this government site are a good place to start.

Question - What is the Higher Rate Attendance Allowance? You will find it if you click on the title of this post or the link above.

Well done

It takes a lot to stand up and be counted. Society will always have bullies but with you about the bullies will soon realise that bullying will not be tolerated by staff and students alike.

Numeracy for Health and Social Care

This is your blogspot. It will have information about your course. It will have links to useful websites which will save having to remember or type in the full address.
Your class used to be separate classes for 'Health' and 'Social Care'. Now that you are in a combined class some of the information may not seem relevant to you.

Welcome

Welcome to the brand new Clydebank College!

Welcome to your website or blog. A blog is a website which puts new stuff at the top and pushes old stuff to the bottom.

There is loads of stuff on the web to help make your numeracy more relevant and interesting. This blog will have links to them to save you having to type in long web addresses (URLs)

The key thing about a blog is that you go to the bottom of the page and work your way to the top.

Gross Pay, Nett Pay etc.

Work through the LTS Online resource on Gross Pay, Nett Pay etc. Although this is dated it is still useful. Work out the answers to the questions yourself on paper before clicking 'reveal'.

Long time .. No see

It seems like ages since we did Standard Deviation .. Can you remember it?
Here is a question..
The number of hours worked by a part time Care Assistant each day is
4 5 6 5 5

(a) What is the average (mean)number of hours worked?
(b) What is the Mode?
(c) What is the Range?
(d) What is the Standard Deviation?

Income Tax

Clicking here or on the title above will take you directly to the current allowances and rates for Income Tax.
What is the Personal Allowance at the moment?

If someone earns £7200 per annum, how much tax do they pay in the year 2007/2008? How much would they pay in 2008/2009?

In 2007/8 a care assistant earns £14,000 per annum, some of her tax is at the 'starting rate' and the remainder is paid at the 'basic rate'. How much tax does she pay? What is her net pay?
There was an uproar when the Chancellor announced changes to the tax rules so that there was no 'starting rate'. Why?
